Thank you citrula for the very useful comment. I think we will stick with paper given the complexity of online mapping and the vivacious community attached to that pastime, but I will propose that tool (and my takeaways from this conversation) to the group

Perhaps consider informing new users that there is a substantial amount of required reading behind the misleading tutorial that invites users to start mapping. I think our time is far better spent on a mapping solution that isn't equivalent to joining a TTRPG run by accountants.

I think there's a disconnect here - we are mapping presently used riding routes on public roads that have inadequate infrastructure for horses so that infrastructure can be added. These routes are in use by equestrians despite the absence of sidewalks and other safety infrastructure. The purpose of collecting this data in one place is to illustrate the need for better infrastructure along these routes. If you have a more appropriate app to suggest for this purpose I would be glad to use that instead.
