Hi squeaker_andrus,

thank you for keeping an eye on the quality of OSM. The values I tagged for "ref" and "railway:ref" are always the names of the level crossings – they are written onto the side of the little, accompanying concrete building where the computers and batteries for the level crossings are housed.

However, you are right: in Germany the official designation of the level crossing is often, or even in most cases, the name of the street that crosses the tracks at that level crossing.

If you have a look at the german-language OpenRailwayMap tagging scheme (osm.wiki/DE:OpenRailwayMap/Tagging) – section regarding level crossings – it explicitly states that street names are permissible if they are written onto the side of the concrete building.

If you use algorithms to find suspicious edits regarding this tag, I politely suggest changing them in a way that they do not flag correct changesets.

Thanks and best regards!
