The source of the edits is my having been there yesterday and looking at it. The council have just built a cycle track through the junction.

I think it's something to do with how the traffic order works. No part of the highways is unavailable to pedestrians, so a footway is not "designated" for their use; it is merely the part of the highway that vehicles cannot use: essentially all highways are permissive for pedestrians first, with all other users having to be licenced or mandated legally to use it. Therefore, the designation in my mind is the status of the cycle track only, as all parts of public highway remain for pedestrian use unless they are exclusively prohibited.

The ability for search is really the most helpful end result of my edit, so I'm pleased you've helped me out and moved the label to a more appropriate location. As a Wikipedian, I am used to online collaboration, and I hope this is not my only edit to OSM. I can only wonder why I've not done so sooner considering how straightforward it actually was!
