Thank you.

That makes perfect sense.

To quote from the link you gave:

This surface is known as "asphalt, blacktop, or pavement in North America, and tarmac or bitumen macadam in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland"

That's exactly what I said...

Tarmacadam was invented in the UK but has since been abbreviated to tarmac. It is used in the UK to describe all road surfaces with a bituminous component. Asphalt I believe is an American term so is inappropriate in this country.

Thanks Andy.

I've made some changes along the lines you suggest.

Thoughts?

Hi Phil

Thanks for your observation.

Just to explain better I've been a canal enthusiast for about 60 years and I've always had a particular interest in abandoned canals.

The Shrewsbury Canal was the original name but it, and its branch to Newport, were absorbed by the Shropshire Union Canal in 1845 and became branches of that canal thereafter. So the names now shown have been in use for a very long time.

The inconsistency was obvious because the OpenStreetMap naming of the Newport canal reflects its most recent name. Hence the change I made for consistency.

If the Shrewsbury Canal is reinstated it would make sense to change the naming of the Newport Branch.

I'm not sure...

Thanks for the advice.

I'm just getting into this and learning how best to do things.

Kind regards
