goedegazelle, as ManuelB701 said, having multiple tags for the same thing will make the data harder to read for data consumers and increase the risk of mistakes when interpreting the data. And while OSM does follow the principle of "any tags you like", 'this does not mean "feel free to ignore existing tagging schemes"' (excerpt from wiki).

I'm also not sure what you mean when you say only a few people make decisions on the wiki. The wiki, like the map, is open for everyone to contribute to and follows community consensus.
