Changeset When Comment

I think I have read the Duck tagging OSM page a bit too harshly. But I also realise that I haven't read yet the page about Path controversy so I will do this today or tomorrow.

The line which dissuaded me from using highway=path with bicycle/foot/horse was this line:

> The highway=path tag turns OSM tagging on its head. It's a largely meaningless object. It shifts the burden onto the mapper, who has to start with four tags where one was enough. It makes it more difficult for, say, a renderer (which now has to parse these four tags, rather than one) to know how to render it. This isn't how we talk about ducks, it isn't how we tag railway stations, chemists, trunk roads or farms, and it shouldn't be how we tag cycleways.

I have now noticed that there's this page so I will give this a read:

Pete, thanks again.
Can I ask you to comment on the note I made (link below). You seem to know this area perhaps better than me, but I still thought I will take a photo yesterday and ask this. I want to double check that the signs I photographed fit the definition of bicycle=designated. I would appreciate your feedback.

Pete,
thanks for this. I am happy to revert this changeset, but can I just confirm with you what I wrote in the other changeset namely that adding bicycle=designated would feed into bicycle routing and still be in line with the dug tagging comments that I keep finding on the OSM wiki (and perhaps interpreting to literally?).

I can verify next time I am in this area, but I am pretty sure that there was no clear cycling infrastructure on the ground like separate lanes. There are occasional arrow signs with bicycle icon so it seems to me that bicycle=designated is the right thing to do, but I am happy to be corrected or guided on this.

Many thanks for this comment Pete. You are right, of course. I have changed it now to bicycle=designated and added segregated=no. Please see my changeset cited below.

I am reading on the wiki that cycleway should be a way which has some characteristics of cycling infrastructure and there isn't really anything there. The only thing which marks it for bicycles are sporadic signs: bicycle+arrow - not even a the pedestrian/bicycle sign.

It looks therefore like a footway. It's so narrow that I feel I need to stop for pedestrians when I pass anyone there.

Is adding adding bicycle=designated enough to imply the use by bicycles?

* I should *not* be taking wiki too literally, I meant.

Done. Thanks. What a difference! Just in GB it's 8 vs hundreds. The wiki page says service:bicycle* requires shop=bicycle and this is not a shop, but perhaps I should be taking wiki too literally here?

Thanks for clarifying. I think I was trying to answer too literally using StreetComplete, but what you're saying is very clear now. I was also additionally confused by the fact that the lights were spread out quite irregularly so I wasn't sure. I found the OSM wiki pages that describe the convention, so I will correct those entries.

Hi, Nathan_A_RF,
Thanks for this. I confess I am a bit confused. The entire East Boldre is inside New Forest National Park which is 40 miles an hour zone. There's a zone sign in front of the village with 30mph limit and the Main Road has 30mph road sign repeated throughout. Most of these side roads are not lit, though Chapel Lane is an exception. So I guess it should be all lit streets should
"nsl_restricted" are non-lit should it be "sign"?

Yes, I am pretty sure I misinterpreted it when I was there. There's a photo on their website so if this is not a plaque (stele?), please let me know.

Sorry, I must have misclicked something or confused with the statue next to it? I just changed it to plaque, which I think is more appropriate.

Thanks, rskedgell. You are right - I have just expressed a subjective opinion there without knowing the details of the tag. I will double check tomorrow when I am there and correct. Sorry, and thanks for pointing it out.

Also, I just read the wiki on building and I understand that semi-detached houses are also "house" when considered individually within a pair.

Thanks, Bernard. I will pay attention to this when I do the remaining houses in the area.
