I stand corrected on this. I drove this stretch yesterday and Caltrans does include "Junior" in the name of the Freeway as oppposed to the colloquial name commonly used on other routes named from for the civil rights leader.

There were multiple conflicting alignments of Thing Valley Road showing on OSM through this area of Thunder Valley. SEE LINK FROM Google Maps

I applied this name in accordance with a 'Winery Lane" sign marking a road with no other name it along Highway 79.

This road serves the retreat/resort located at Indian Head.

The name was changed FROM El Monte Road so as not to be confused with the ACTUAL alignment of El Monte Road to the south as seen on the map. The road in question is dirt/gravel owned and maintained by the City of San Diego Water Department and follows the route of the pipeline/aqueduct (hence the name) that carries water from the El Capitan Reservoir to the Alvarado Filtration Plant at Lake Murray. I made this correction as the Ranger for the City of San Diego assigned to the San Diego City Lakes for 12 plus years.

I learned to waterski and windsurf there. And later served as Chairman of the SDSU Campus Recreation Board which operates the MBAC facility. And still later attended Boating Safety/ Rescue, Navigation, Marine firefighting, and law enforcement classes there as a Ranger /Lifeguard for the City.

There was a sign at this location that preceded the construction of the California 56 Freeway that remained in place therafter. Not sure if it was placed by the City or by Caltrans

i explained the historical and present significance and Identification of the original route of U.S. 101 for interpretation and tourism purposes. There is significant interest in the route of this highway, and it is a disservice to the traveling and commuting motorists to obscure or conceal the route

My intent was to identify the U.S. 101 historic route which is of significant interest to motorists for tourism and navigation purposes (this is the only alternate north-south route to Interstate 5 which is critical to traffic circulation when a sigalert or major incident occurs on I-5

The stretch of roadway in question WAS the freeway U.S. 101 before Interstate 5 was constructed. There is fenced (restricted access) along this stretch of the U.S. 101 historic right of way, NO cross traffic NOR traffic signals, ALL junctions are grade separated with ramps (or cloverleaf) interchange. Pedestrians are prohibited. The sidewalks and bike lanes you refer to are on the frontage roads (which are only located along motorways)

I stand by my edits to the California 56 Freeway. As a matter or principle and practice, freeways in California are assigned PRIMARY names by GEOGRAPHIC REFERENCE based upon a city, landform or historic feature that the route passes through. This precedent was set in order to assist motorists in navigation to their destination on freeways and are intended to transcend time. Identification of freeways based upon prominent landmarks (versus route #'s) helps distinguish one freeway from another and also results in successful broadcast, delivery and interpretation of traffic reports. We all have heroes and role models, and I assume that yours was Ted Williams. But naming a freeway after person that was famous at one time, does not assist motorists and that is why FREEWAYS ARE NEVER NAMED AFTER PEOPLE. Caltrans has many types of secondary, parochial, ceremonial and historical names that are designated to a segment or milemarker for celebratory or memorial purposes. ie: Jacob Dekema Freeway, Officer John Doe Memorial Fwy, Packard Memorial Parkway, Kumeyaay Highway, Vietnam Veterans Memorial Highway, Tony Gwynn Memorial Freeway. The City of San Diego took action to rename the road at the eastern terminus of California 56 Freeway to Ted Williams Pkwy. However the City does not have authority to name a state highway, and freeways in California do not carry the name of connecting roadways. Could you identify where "Officer Zeppatella Memorial Freeway" is? I rest my case.

I don't understand. I was the Ranger assigned by City of San Diego to patrol this area and I know it quite well. Please clarify / explain
/ eloborate on my error.. Thanks
