He is right, the footpath is definitely a shared path, from the turnoff to Roseburn Maltings to at least Sauchiebank.
(although I've never used it as such)
Actually following a visit just now I'm going to disagree with myself and go with drnoble on this. There are several implications that parts of this might be shared use (general signing of Edinburgh local route and a brick line along part of the pavement) but nothing concrete (no shared use signage for this section). Looks like one of those situations where ordinary cyclists can't actually tell what the legal situation is. Unless someone wants to actually talk to the cycling officers in the council there's currently no way to tell properly. I'm going to resolve the note making the assumption that this is just pavement.
