Canvec Thoughts

Posted by the506 on 29 February 2012 in English.

As you may notice by looking at my edits, I've been spending the bulk of my time on OSM lately importing Canvec data, particularly in New Brunswick. It's a job I hope to complete in the next 3-4 months.

To say New Brunswick road data in Canvec is lacking is an understatement. There is literally no street or address data, and the road data that does exist is 10 years out of date. I add all street names and re-classify roads manually from the StatsCan database, and then augment all imports with corrections and updates of my own. New highways are often traced off the satellite imagery available from GeoBase and/or Service New Brunswick data.

Once I'm finished with NB, I hope to import address data from SNB if I can do it in a manner that won't make me pull my hair out, and then move on to the missing parts of Nova Scotia and PEI. Nova Scotia roads on Canvec present challenges of its own (classifications are completely screwed up), and the existing PEI data in OSM outside Charlottetown is very low-quality.

With. OSM data being used by more and more outside applications every week, the quality of the data in rural Canada can still quite frankly be horrendous. Canada risks running behind the rest of the world in OSM usage if this situation isn't rectified quickly. I'm doing my small part to do so.
