Celebrating Open Data Maps in Taiwan -- By Tracing it Hard

Good work, Open Data Community and NLSC! And congratulations for Taiwan OSM Community getting such a valuable map source.

I am wondering how the open data community negotiate with the government to acquire the rights to trace the official data. Don’t the officials worry about security affairs of military areas or somthing by providing z15 data? You know here in the PRC, the officials refuse to do so on the excuse of national security.

Trying Overpass API

Thank you, @Sanderd17 and @aseerel4c26. Then I’d be at ease using the service. I’ve heard about the help forum before but seldom use it. I write this in diary because I think this diary is mainly for a record of my own osm experience, which is not merely a technical inquery. I would try the help forum when I have pure technical problems next time.

Interesting OSM Find of the Day

Some time earlier this year, Beijing was tagged as a hospital and reverted later, too. It’s really strange.

Thank you all!

I'm fed up with all this spam on the RSS feed, especially Chinese

Hi Jedrzej, I’m so sad to read what you said in your comment. Although it’s illegal to map here in China, that doesn’t mean we’re jealous of this enthusiastic community and we hate any forms of vandalism of course, no matter it’s in diary posts or in the live osm geodatabase. SPAM is a common phenomena on the Internet, that is, it not only exists in China towards OSM community but also takes place in any other places towards any website or email addresses, so I think it’s better to prevent it technically and rationally rather than slandering others. I agree with you. There are so many spam posts in Chinese. I hope there’s a button to report these posts to the administrator so that they can be removed. Although this cannot solve your problem by using RSS feed, if there’s something like that report function, I, as a native Chinese, would greatly like to help identify and deal with these spams.

Mapping my campus: cooperate with existing data

Hi @Stalfur, I’ve consulted my friends who is living in those dorms about how their dorm will be used during summer/winter vacations. They said nothing will change and never heard about dorms used as hostels. Anyway, thank you for your kindly and precise consideration about handling the tags contributed by others. ;-)

First Diary: Minor Fruit and Question

Hi 4rch, thanks for your kind reminder of legal risk I was taking. As the wiki says, the gov presumably will not hassle us. I was a little worried before and have read the related law. I think editing maps based on satellite imagery is not so dangerous as those reported to have been fined a lot of money. Perhaps I will never upload a GPS trace, for using WGS 84 coordinate in survey is illegal in China. Also, as you can see I draw nothing in the military zone. These are what I do to avoid jeopardizing the state security. It’s likely that I will continue to edit streets and POIs for navigation purposes rather than such a detailed map of town, for I’m not familiar with other places as detailed as my hometown. Maybe I will also call for other students in railway fans club to join the complement of China Railways Project, which has been stopped for years.:)

First Diary: Minor Fruit and Question

Thank you all for all your helpful advice and kind tips, as well as the warmth of the OSM community!
