A minute of facts about the duration of changesets

Tbf, for some usecases (e.g. the *Complete-editors) it allows to avoid many changesets

A minute of facts about the duration of changesets

A changeset is opened by sending some metadata to the server (e.g. contributor ID, editor, comment, …).

Then, one or more ‘changeset XML’-files can be uploaded.

Then, the changeset is closed if:

  • the editing program sends a ‘close changeset’-signal
  • one hour after the last upload of a changeset XML OR
  • 24 hours after the changeset is opened (but I wouldn’t be surprised if one changeset pops up that seems to be longer then 24hours, either by a bug or by some timezone shenanigans)

https://mapcomplete.org (which I develop) exploits this behaviour by not closing a changeset and by trying to reuse a changeset as much as possible.

contributor for about 24 hours now

JOSM is not a beginners tool - far from it.

There are other tools out there, try e.g. https://mapcomplete.org

I think something went wrong with your diary entry, but https://mapcomplete.org/waste?z=16.2&lat=0.4065226106638278&lon=9.443137417462253 might be interesting to you

The OSM Iceberg

You can validate your OSM-profile on Mastodon BTW:

  1. Add a link to your mastodon as <a href='https://yourmastodon/@account' rel='me'>My Mastodon account</a>

  2. in your profile settings, under ‘Extra fields’, add link to your OSM-profile in the right column (thus: https://www.openstreetmap.org/user/Xvtn), you’ll get a green dot

For example: https://en.osm.town/@pietervdvn

The OSM Iceberg

Hilarious! I love it. The bottom one really caught me of guard. Also, I can check like 80% of the things you mention. :)

Do you have a mastodon-account? It would be great to post it there as well. If you don’t have one, can I repost it there (and on lemmy?)

An overview of reviews made with MapComplete

Ah, it seems like the link in my last paragraph was incorrect. I’ve fixed it there.

I ran it again (but am to lazy to do the formatting)

OpenStreetMap is in trouble

@publicerination

Yeah, we should be careful, but also welcome the actually good contributions when they are made.

A little how-to on mapping playgrounds

I’m also working on ‘MapComplete Studio’, which makes it easy to create new layers and thematic maps for MapComplete (which also allows one to add new objects and edit object)

This’ll allow you to create a layer quickly for playground equipment. And I might adopt user created layers as ‘official’ layers after a review.

It is not ready for prime time yet but will be in a few weeks. I did some user tests though, and someone (which knows MapComplete well as user) was able to setup a new layer within ~45 minutes.

I’ll PM you the link to play around with

Hey, some of those categories are available on mapcomplete.osm.be/pets

“The Birdcage is lonely” - @OpenStreetMap engagement on Mastodon/Fediverse is streets ahead of Twitter.

To add insult to injury: the mapcomplete-account recently reached over 1000 followers on Mastodon! In Twitter/X, it is only about 300 (but I’m not actively posting there anymore)

(for other readers: TSNFKAT means: The Social Network Formerly Know As Twitter)

“The Birdcage is lonely” - @OpenStreetMap engagement on Mastodon/Fediverse is streets ahead of Twitter.

Part of the puzzle is that Twitter ‘steals’ some of the attention away. A Tweet has to reach an audience between the “for you” feed (with very bland, easy-to-consume messages), advertisements and anything that twitter pushes for profit (advertisements or Tweets by Elmo).

However, Mastodon has an even playing field. If person A follows 100 followers which all toot with the same frequency, the chance that person A sees a toot by B is 1%.

But, it’s also true that OSM is a techy topic and that mostly technical people are on Mastodon.

Renaming is an option, but often the individual thematic maps come with their own branding, especially if they are commissioned (such as the Pin je Punt-one).

I’m open to rename, but it has to be a catchy name ;) Map Your Theme isn’t to bad, but I’m not very fond of it either…
