Atlas App on iPhone

Posted by Pete Hawkins on 18 August 2009 in English.

Came across the iPhone Atlas App from Routebuddy recently. I have been following Rouetbuddy's progress for a while and here in Atlas we have a neat little programme, that either links into OSM or OCM online or, I'm in the UK, you can pay for and download the OS Explorer maps (other topo maps available elsewhere).

Using the iPhone's onboard GPS, the app tracks your route and downloading the GPX file to a Mac (and I assume a PC) is a simple affair. Then it's a simple upload to OSM and one can map away to one's hearts content. Neat and simple and free!

Comparing the process of downloading tracks from the iPhone and my Magellan eXplorist 600, frankly doesn't bear comparison. The iPhone is simple, the Magellan is an involved process (yes I am on a Mac!).

One added advantage of having the OS maps on the iPhone too, is that one can compare the accuracy of the GPS trace with "the official" map before committing it to OSM. Not sure if that is cheating, although reading the T&C and copyright issues, am sure this is kosher.

Anyway the long and short of this ramble is that the area around Tideswell in the English Peak District is being checked and added too.
