I was initially very impressed by the golf course mapping; but on inspecting the tagging that changed to just being 'sort of' impressed. You've undoubtedly put a lot of work into it, but at the moment the course is a classic case of 'tagged to render'. E.g., natural=beach used for bunkers, leisure=common used for the fairways.

There is a quite developed proposal for tagging courses (http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Proposed_features/Golf_course).

Hi,

You are of course completely correct, the golf course is indeed 'tagged to render'. I have been watching the proposals for golf courses for some time, including the 2008 proposal you mentioned. I have also seen some really nice renderings. I will happily change the tags to the correct ones, once the proposals have been accepted and entered into mapnik default map style. The present work it there to show what we can do by tracing and then by having a mapping party rather than just having a mapping party.

The present map will be in a local news article, which may in turn, inspire some local mappers in that area.

I am looking forward to the ability to render golf courses properly tagged, because we have 15 golf courses in Edinburgh. If we can map them all it will get the golf community talking and perhaps inspired to join in.

Until that time, I will have to just cheat a little. please forgive me

Richard Weait's golf map overlay is currently off-line (he's updating the database) but this works with the well-established (aka proposed) tags.

That is a very good reason, which didn't occur to me at all.

Please forgive me for being to hasty in my judgement. I hope the mapping party went well.
