The original name of this small valley within the East Fork of the Jemez River watershed, was called "Vallecitos de los Indios". That place name is visible as early as the 1880s on USGS maps. "Sierra de los Pinos" was a name given to this housing subdivision within Sandoval County sometime after 1960.

The boundary shown here with dots and dashes is labeled "Jemez National Recreation Area". That is not correct. That boundary is much larger, encompassing this area within the dots and dashes boundary. The boundary shown on the map is the incorporated area of the "Village of Jemez Springs"
