Thanks for your explanation. I use the same guidelines as well, but I do make exceptions for roads leading to important government installations, like high schools or prisons (like in this case), which can be located in smaller villages (although Beon is somewhere between a small and a large village).

Why? That road leads out to the prison complex at Beon. Would that not classify as tertiary way?

Hi DDPION,

Not every dirt road is an "unmaintained track". The tag "unmaintained track" should only be used for roads for agricultural or forestry purposes. Access roads to houses should be tagged as "service roads", residential roads as "residential roads", and then tag the surface as "ground" or "gravel", or whatever the road surface is.

Hi JoeG,

Thank you for your detailed additions of farmland and waterways. Please be aware that coffee and tea plantations should be tagged as orchards, though, according to the OSM wiki. I have made the corresponding changes.

I suggest you reclassify Poros Kenyam-Wamena as Primary Road (or Secondary?). There is no other trunk road on the whole island except between Sorong and Manokwari. Would not Jayapura - Wamena be a trunk road, before this Kenyam - Wamena Section. And is it now completed, or stil in construction? If still in construction, please leave it as "construction: yes".

An airport should not be tagged as a building. In addition, I believe that this airport is only in its planning stage. Only actually existing features should be added to OSM.

The roads were not in the wrong place, I just used the much more accurate and newer Maxar imagery, not Bing, as you did... Please always check whether roads align to any of the other satellite maps before changing them.

Hi. While I agree that most of these are not secondary roads (the secondary road should probably end at Kagua), they might be tertiary roads. Tertiary roads connect smaller towns and larger villages, regardless of whether they are dirt roads or paved. The surface and smoothness of the road can be tagged separately.

Hi Mabuyaka. Please do not disconnect the bridge from the road, just mark the bridge as not passable by motor vehicles (as I have done so now).

Hi. "Walking roads" should be tagged only as highway=path, not as sidewalks (those are reserved for sidewalks on the side of roads in cities).

The motto of OSM is to only tag what you can see. That means that you tag villages and hamlets (settlement centers) with a node, but not wards. As most wards usually have the name of a village, that should not be too much of a problem. For ward councils proper, you would need to know and draw the boundaries of each ward and use the boundary=administrative tag, with admin_level=8. As far as I know, that has not been done yet in PNG (and as boundaries are usually rather contentious on the local level, maybe also not a good idea).

Please write clearer notes on what you have changed in the map. So here, for example, "added village"

107875633 over 4 years ago

Hi. Roads are usually just named after the village they are leading to. So Yale Road, not Road to Yale. And the tag "unmaintained track" is reserved for agricultural, logging or plantation roads, not for roads to hamlets or villages. Classify them either as minor roads, residential roads or service roads.

Hi there. Great job filling in the names of villages and hamlets. Please make sure you tag them correctly, though. Villages are not towns (that designation is reserved for towns such as Kagua or Ialibu), and hamlets should be marked with the hamlet tag, not with "townhall:city".

Hi there. Great you are updating the maps. Village names please without the "village" at the end, just the names.

107286801 over 4 years ago

Hi, please read the wiki on roads. Tracks is only to be used for agricultural or logging roads, not access to building or houses. These should be tagged as residential or service roads. I reverted some of your changes.

Great edits, thank you. Please note, however, that villages should be named only with their name, not with "village" added. So it is Maur, not Maur village. I corrected it already.

Almost all of it. On Maxar, you see it much better, also since Maxar is actually the much more recent imagery (Bing is really old here).

I agree it is better to map trees than nothing at all. On-the-ground knowledge will be difficult to achieve, it's been ages since I have been up that way.

Here too there are large swaths of pine tree plantations (the darker green parts) within natural wood.
