As I remember it it's not really "open on one side", and just a passage through the building with a very subway-tunnel-like feel. Don't think I've actually used in in the last 6 years though so I may be misremembering.

Yeah, it was deliberate :-)
The tunnel is basically a pedestrian bridge over the road and pavements integrated into a building.
