I surveyed the route south of the A11 in person a few months ago. From memory the southern 2/3 of it is a farm track. The last 1/3 ran along a field up to A11 where there was evidence of a place where pedestrians could cross (as you say ... dangerously). I think the old road may have grown over (would have to check).

Satellite imaging suggests it goes over. Question of how the extension of wellacre quarry has effected the route. I can't find evidence it has been discontinued however. Needs a survey.
