The Putnam Trail (an old rail bed, now used as a bike and hiking trail) CANNOT be accessed from Van Cortlandt Park South. The trail ends just north of Van Cortlandt Park South, in a ravine well below street level, separated by woods and without access. The southernmost access point to the Putnam Trail is north of this point, near the parking lot for the golf course, just south of the pond.
