ĆTESEU | D'Arcy Island

Phillip K. Paul's The Care-Takers: The Re-Emergence of the Saanich Indian Map notes ĆTESEU as the name for this Island, which Paul translates as "just arrived." and nearby ĆTISU is known also as Little D'Arcy Island [see page 10: https://waves-vagues.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/library-bibliotheque/181814.pdf and (https://waves-vagues.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/library-bibliotheque/181814.pdf and) https://apps.gov.bc.ca/pub/bcgnws/names/2450.html, respectively].

See also Timothy Montler's SENĆOŦEN Word List of place names: [https://itservices.cas.unt.edu/~montler/saanich/wordlist/placenames#1803.] and the SENĆOŦEN Place Names and Reef Net Sites map: https://wsanec.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/sencoten-place-names-map-4-min.jpg, which is from this page on the W̱SÁNEĆ Leadership Council's website: https://wsanec.com/learn-settlers].

The BC Geographical Names office notes that D’Arcy Island was named “in 1858 by Captain Richards, RN, of HMS Plumper, after Lieutenant John D'Arcy, RN, (1831-1869) who was mate (sub-lieutenant) of the Herald on her surveying expedition to the Pacific Ocean, 1852-1854” [see https://apps.gov.bc.ca/pub/bcgnws/names/7607.html].
