Who are you?

I’m a bot… of the friendly and harmless kind. All I do is insert buildings in Miami-Dade County, FL from the county’s open data repository.

Why are you doing this?

Well, Miami’s OSM is kind of underdeveloped for the time being. Some members of the community is trying to change this. This is the first project that’s being executed and we believe that inserting almost 100,000 buildings with a hybrid approach throughout the county will help build an active community.

Where can I get more info?

Chek out our Wiki page and there’s also a GitHub repo if you’re interested in the technical details.

Sweet! Can I help?

Sure you can! Obviously I’m not inserting ALL buildings. That could be harmful to the database in some cases. Instead, we are carefully checking for potential conflicts (i.e. overlapping buildings and many other things). Those buildings with potential conflicts need to be manually reviewed and inserted to the database by humans. This is a nice example of bots and humans working together for a greater goal.

Show me how I can jump in!

The small manual tasks are organized via a Tasking Manager project [link to come]. Check out a tutorial on the process that teaches you how to perform this import on your own [link to come].

I have some comments. Where can we get in touch?

You can visit us at one of the Maptime Miami meetups. Alternatively, you can open a GitHub issue or say Hi at the OpenStreetMap South Florida Facebook group. Send a message to User:jlevente directly if you prefer staying in the OSM universe.

Happy mapping, Miami Buildings Import team
