Came here because I need to generate automatic maps form user input.

  • User has no clue about openstreetmaps
  • User enters address of venue to the best of his knowledge, which varies
  • I need to create an automatic map of the venue without manual editing of the address

40% - 50% of the maps are blank. Yet most of the venues are in the database.

Trying to improve this. By adding missing POI. Adding missing address. Adding missing parts of the name. Trying to help Nomiatium, eh, Nomi… (what makes this word so hard to remember?) to understand all humans, not just programmers.

What I learned so far: The more information you give Nominatim, the less likely it will find the POI. Which is unintuitive.

Also want to show a pop-up with further info. Great feature. So I tend to add website, wikidata, mapillary, wikimedia,…

Generally I like OSM a lot. It offers a lot. I like the look of the standard map. I like leaflet, it’s features, simplicity and fluidity.

But opensreetmap.org still has this vibe: Don’t use me unless you’re nerd! The UI of the regular search often breaks my heart. Which is unfortunate - there is so much to find.

Case in point: This is a search engine. On the mobile homepage are a lot of buttons without text labels.

But one quite important button is missing: A SEARCH button.
