Hi 0x!

just so you know, there is some serious contention over the mapping of sports pitches. What you have done here is not wrong by American mapping standards at all; it is the way that most pitches here are mapped, with the games pitch being separate from a surrounding "general recreation" area.

In Europe and I believe the rest of the world however, the preferred method is to map the out of bounds area as part of the pitch. Their reasoning is that the recreation ground tag is for general recreation. So it would moreso encompass fields that can be used for any purpose. Because sports are a specific recreational activity, they dont consider them to be fair to label as recreation grounds. So, by their standards, this whole area would be a tennis pitch. for cases where there are two on one court, the pitches are extended to the edges of that court and split in the middle.

They use the tag leisure=sports_centre to map areas with multiple sport pitches. However, this tag also must only be used if the area is enclosed in some way. So it is more specific.

I dont really have a horse in this race, I dont play sports, but i learned this from a discussion I had about this with other mappers when working with mapping pitches.

One possible solution to this discrepancy, and in my opinion the best one to avoid the specificity of the tag sports centre needing to be enclosed, is a new tag such as "sports ground".

Just felt like I should make you aware of this controversy, as it seems like you are embarking to remap a ton of sport pitches across America (thank you for doing it!).

Again, what is here is not wrong by the local standards, there is just contention from international mappers about this.

Thank you for your edits and happy mapping :D

yeah, it doesnt seem like there is a real consensus. Based on my discussions, the US community uses recreation area, but the rest of the world uses sports center and finds the recreational area to be ludicrous. So yeah.

Yeah, I will try to look out for local mapping conventions, or try to stick to the US.

Youre all good, i dont take this as beratement!

Happy mapping!

turns out i was wrong, based on a conversation i had with more experienced mappers. the out of bounds is still part of the pitch, and recreation ground is not correct, sports centre is, which i noticed you had already tagged, so thank you for that!

i went back and fixed what i did, based on the conversation.

hello! thank you for editing openstreetmap!

By the way, when mapping sports pitches, only the area where the sport is actually played (within the marked boundaries) should be tagged as a sports pitch. The area around it can be tagged with landuse=recreation_ground. I did this for these tennis courts, so you can see an example of how to do it :).

happy mapping, Loopslol7

glad that you were trying it out, we always need more people editing, especially out in rural areas like this :D.

Its ok, thank you for understanding! Happy mapping :)

Hello!

Please dont forget to add changeset comments! it helps other mappers to understand what you are doing on the map.

I also use go map, and i understand it can be easy to just submit the edit without the comment, but it is very useful for other mappers.

Thank you for helping with the map!
