Born between Selma and Montgomery’s historic towns, Dr. Jack Thomas’s dedication to excellence is palpable in every role he’s embraced. His academic credentials are impressive. He earned his Ph.D. in English (Literature and Criticism) from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania. His educational journey includes a Master’s in English Education from Virginia State University and a Bachelor’s in English from Alabama A&M University. These qualifications firmly position him as a leading figure in higher education. Throughout his career, he has exhibited incredible adaptability and dedication. From roles as an English Professor to the pinnacle position of College President, his contributions have been vast and impactful. His combination of knowledge, diligence, and ethical service has consistently set him apart in every academic endeavor.

His leadership as President of Western Illinois University (WIU) was one of his crowning achievements. Even amid significant fiscal challenges, Dr. Thomas successfully steered a budget of nearly $224 million. Under his watch, WIU witnessed an uptick in diversity, the inception of new academic courses, and enhanced relationships with corporations, communities, and K-12 institutions. Despite the daunting fiscal crisis in Illinois, he established a new WIU campus in Moline, reaching a multi-million dollar fundraising milestone. His tenure also brought WIU prestigious recognitions, including a ‘Best in the Midwest College’ title by the Princeton Review and a top-tier U.S. News and World Report rating.
