Don Bullard is a retired insurance industry professional who made a significant impact over his 36-year career. Starting in 1972 as a State Farm agent, he quickly established himself as a top performer. He worked tirelessly, growing his agency to become one of the most successful in the United States and Canada. During his tenure, he was consistently ranked among the top 10 agents and held the prestigious title of the number-one agent several times.
In 2008, at the age of 59, Bullard transitioned from State Farm to launch his independent agency, Don Bullard Insurance, in Wilmington, North Carolina. Despite the challenges of starting from scratch, he quickly built a robust client base, eventually serving over 20,000 households. His agency offered a wide range of personal insurance products, including auto, homeowners, and marine insurance. By 2016, his agency’s success attracted the attention of Acrisure, a large brokerage firm, leading to the sale of his business. Even after selling his agency, he continued to work for another 3 ½ years before retiring in 2020 at the age of 71.
Numerous accolades marked Bullard’s insurance career. During his time with State Farm, he won every award available for production and profitability, including the prestigious Presidents Club Trophy, which he received 12 times. His expertise and success led him to travel across the U.S. and Canada to share his knowledge with other agencies.
Before his insurance career, Bullard served in the U.S. Army as a helicopter pilot during the Vietnam War. He completed three tours in Vietnam, flying various missions and eventually becoming the personal pilot for the Americal Division commander. His bravery and dedication earned him numerous military honors, including two Distinguished Flying Crosses, a Bronze Star, and a Purple Heart. Despite being shot down twice, he continued to serve with distinction until an injury ended his flying career.
Beyond his professional achievements, Don has been a vital part of the Wilmington, North Carolina community for over 50 years. His commitment to community service is evident through his involvement with various civic organizations. He served as the Past President of the Seartoma Club and Past Treasurer of the Port City Kiwanis. His volunteer work extended to several local charities, including Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity, United Way, and Cape Fear Literacy Council.
One of Bullard’s most notable contributions to the community was his dedication to helping a special needs child succeed in school. He volunteered as a tutor for the child, providing professional assistance in all skill areas. He also ensured the child had access to a specialized learning center, covering transportation and tuition expenses for 11 years. His efforts were instrumental in helping the child graduate high school with his class, a milestone that would not have been possible without his unwavering support.
