DMH was born in Melbourne, Australia in 1943. He graduated BSc from Monash University in 1965. He then worked as a computer programmer from 1966 onwards, retiring at the end of 2017.

From 1995 to 2017 he specialized in the support and use of Geographic Information Systems. Employers through this period included: MapInfo Corporation, Australian Government Departments, Australian Capital Territory’s Emergency Services Agency.
