Resolved note #1227513
Description
Needs fixing: the old Lancaster Canal is currently mapped as both waterway=derelict_canal + highway=* on the same way (although some sections have two ways on top of each other). waterway=derelict_canal probably shouldn't be used in places where the canal is completely filled in and no longer recognisable (eg in Kendal) although the wiki definition isn't very clear. Secondly the highway tag should probably be on a separate way next to the old canal in some places, where the path is on the old towpath and not on the same line as the canal. Thirdly "formerly Lancaster Canal" shouldn't be in the name= tag (the path might be called Lancaster Canal Towpath Trail or similar but needs checking). Problem extends from Canal Head in Kendal to just south of Sedgwick.

waterway=derelict_canal --> historic:waterway=canal and name="formerly Lancaster Canal" --> old_name="Lancaster Canal" would probably be the best tag changes for the Kendal parts.
Path name is "Lancaster Canal Trail". Fixed between Kendal and Natland in changeset 55755961, survey probably needed for next section.
NB Tagging list discussion recommends using lifecycle prefixes instead of waterway=derelict_canal (https://lists.openstreetmap.org/pipermail/tagging/2018-April/035762.html)
Fixed a bit more in changeset 60657576.
