Hi, welcome to OSM. Thank you for your edits however as a local I do not see this as a branch line.
I can see that usage was missing, I am not a railway expert but Is there any evidence you have used to come to this reasoning?

What else would it be? https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:railway#Usage defines a main line as 'heavy traffic'. https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/OpenRailwayMap/Tagging says "Use this tag on railways with high maximum speed and dense traffic." Don't think either of those is the case here.
Usage is missing from a lot of GB rail lines, and OpenRailwayMap uses it to decide at what zoom level to show lines. If it is missing, then you can only see the line when zoomed right in. So I would like to update all those records, and am looking for the best way to do that.
I live in Chester, so am local to this line too. I happened to be looking at that area, and updated the tag while I was at it, though updating all the ways one by one is a PITA.

PS possibly Ctr-Wrexham might be considered dense enough to be a 'main line'

Hi Peter
Thank you for your reply, its an odd one but do bear in mind that the wiki can usually be taken with a large pinch of NaCl. The wiki also mentions electrification which from a UK perspective is incorrect. It reminds me of a state of the map talk where a German mapper stated that diesel trains only travel at something like 100km per hour. He was totally unaware that Voyagers travel along the West Coast line at 200kph.I was basing usage on the usage of the other lines in the area. For example the Cambrian and the Marches lines are classified as main.

yeah, I noticed that. Most of the British lines seem to be main, even commuter lines into London. Even stranger is the Pembrokeshire line, which is 'main' as far as Johnston, and then 'branch' to Milford Haven. Personally, I don't much care which category these are put in; I just want them to have a usage tag.
If electrification is the criterion, then all Swiss lines are 'main'. :-) However, I think the thinking behind electrification is correct in that the 'main' lines are the ones that should be electrified, even if not already. I can't see the Welsh lines outside the SE being high priority in this respect, except possibly N Coast line.
Renfe in Spain runs high-speed bimodes.

I did ask the question of a more knowledgeable railway mapper than me and he did say that there is really no main/branch concept in the UK.
Based on the other lines I would tend to go with main if only so it doesn't look less important than the cambrian or the shrewsbury to crewe line. But that is getting into tagging for the renderer which is discouraged in OSM.

I would say Scotland has this right: the main lines from England and on to Inverness/Aberdeen are 'main', i.e. the most important lines, but most of the other rural lines are 'branch'. I would demote many of the English/Welsh lines - but I'm not volunteering to change them all :-)

just as a follow-up to this discussion, I've just been looking at https://www.networkrail.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/Wales-Network-Specification-2017.pdf (map on p10) which classifies routes as primary, secondary, and rural. They have this line as 'primary', and their route specification describes it as 'formerly a double-track main line'. So NR seem to agree with you. If this is a 'main line', then I think Ctr-Wbq should be too, as there's no way that is less important than this one. All a bit arbitrary and inconsistent, I'm afraid.
