It is an established sea ice route. Most ice roads (abundant near the Arctic) are mapped as highway=unclassified. https://data.pgc.umn.edu/maps/antarctica/pgc/11/pdf/McMurdo%20Station%20Sea%20Ice%20Routes%20201415.pdf
Generally, according to the wiki, villages are linked by tertiary ways, and hamlets, by unclassified ways. In this case, the linked settlements are more like isolated dwellings, for which there is no specific highway type. The wiki says that tracks should not be used for roads linking permanent facilities, which is the case with these huts, so I think highway=unclassified is the most suitable option in this case.
I guess that it makes sense. Thanks for reviewing this alpine huts!
