The feature (https://www.openstreetmap.org/node/6047930732) has a note tag linking to this Te Ara article: https://teara.govt.nz/en/photograph/13429/mitchelltown
Maybe the tagging could be downgraded to neighbourhood, and/or the historic element could be reflected in the tagging. Or the element could be deleted entirely.
I don't have the local knowledge to make the call
While used less often now, a lot of old maps have the area marked quite prominently. The Aro Valley War Memorial also includes names from the Mitchelltown area as well.
Can be seen in an old land and survey map here:

As a result, I would say it is worth keeping for the sake of consistency
Thanks - the map is pulling through on Mapbox where we noticed the suburb names. Although it was a historic suburb name, it is no longer used. Is it possible to swap it to a point of interest instead?
my suggestion would be to keep the node but instead of tagging it as a "suburb", tag it as a "locality" or "historic feature" so that it doesn't show up with the same level of prominence as other suburbs
