Southbound to westbound you are changing from the M1 to the M50. Eastbound to southbound you are staying on the M50, which was likely my reasoning at the time. I agree that there is no physical difference, it's just a matter of being able to tell the difference between a (notional) mainline and a link. Note that my reasoning above is at odds with the fact that the southbound-southbound movement is highway=motorway throughout, but to be fair, a straight on movement can hardly be considered a link either.
