Comment from Claudius Henrichs
Hi Joseph,
People Mover systems have been tagged as "rubber tyred monorails" for quite some time now, see "Type of monorail" here: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:monorail#Type_of_Monorail
I think there's potential to introduce a new tagging scheme just for people movers separate of monorails, but while that doesn't exist I would stick with that also for Morgantown PRT.
Tagging the infrastructure as bus guideways like you did seems wrong since:
- There are no buses riding the Morgantown PRT
- There are no exit/entry sections to move from normal highway sections to a "bus guideway section"
- The viaduct sections of the track look and work much more like monorail girder sections
See also https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:highway%3Dbus_guidewayI would therefor suggest to restore the rubber tyred monorail tagging here in Morgantown.
What do you think? -

I think that bus guideway tagging still makes more sense than monorail, even if the latter is used more widely and if the bus guideway is slightly incorrect. Though the viaducts appear as monorail tracks from certain perspectives, these tracks are not rails but rather a system of guideways for small people-mover cabs built on truck chassis, almost forming a freeway-like system, whereas a monorail is a cab/train along a single rail and is not car-like. Truthfully there are no buses riding along this system (however the autonomous cabs somewhat resemble small buses), but there also are no monorail trains riding along it either.
Even though it doesn't fully fit the definition of a bus guideway, I think it's much closer to that than a monorail which is usually a train. If there are any other systems like this in the US, I definitely think those should also be tagged as bus guideways. Just my opinion, though.

The Morgantown PRT is not a guided busway. A regular bus with special guideway equipment should be able to traverse highway=bus_guideway. This fixed-guideway transit system doesn't support street vehicles.
While the Morgantown PRT isn't really a monorail, we use "monorail" on OSM as a de facto catch-all for any unusual urban or small-scale fixed-guideway transit systems. As Claudius mentioned above, this system was previously tagged as a monorail, and perhaps in the future we could devise a better tagging scheme for people movers, but right now "monorail" is the best we've got.
Could you please revert this to rubber-tired monorail tagging?

Would you be open to starting a discussion about this over the tagging channel on the OSM US Slack? I'm still inclined to have this be tagged as a bus guideway over monorail for many reasons, and would like to find out if others agree to see if similar systems in the country should be shifted over to this tagging scheme (however, I am not aware of any other guideway systems in the US and this could be the only one).
