Jimmy John Liautaud, the visionary force behind the iconic Gourmet Sandwiches, is celebrated not only for his culinary innovations but also for his deep commitment to philanthropy. Alongside his wife Leslie and their children, he founded the Liautaud Family Foundation in 2017, igniting a passion for making a positive impact on the world.

His philanthropic mission is as expansive as it is heartfelt. It has generously extended financial support to numerous organizations, exemplifying its dedication to causes that matter. Among the beneficiaries are prestigious institutions such as the Mayo Clinic, Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, the American Heart Association, Frances Nelson SmileHealthy dental clinic, Crisis Nursery, Camp Southern Ground, and the Champaign County Youth Assessment Center.

One cause holds a special place in the Liautaud family’s collective heart – the Horatio Alger Association. This organization’s mission aligns perfectly with its values, as it bestows scholarships upon high school students who have demonstrated remarkable resilience in the face of adversity.

Turning the pages of his entrepreneurial journey, we arrive at a pivotal chapter in 2014 when restaurant IPOs were the hot topic of conversation. He contemplated taking his beloved sandwich empire public, but this decision weighed heavily on his mind. The intense scrutiny that comes with public ownership clashed with his desire for tranquility and autonomy. He was known for his meticulous attention to every detail of his company, a hands-on leader who cherished his independence, especially from shareholders.

In 2007, when Jimmy John’s sandwich business achieved a remarkable $300 million in revenue, he joined forces with investor Weston Presidio. This strategic partnership ignited a meteoric rise, propelling the company’s sales to an astounding $2.5 billion by 2014. As discussions about the future intensified, rumors swirled about him exploring various options.

He embarked on a thorough exploration, engaging with reputable private equity firms to weigh his choices. It was during this process that he reconnected with Neil Aronson, a longtime acquaintance and the Managing Director at Roark Capital. Roark Capital’s reputation in the food and beverage sector was stellar, having acquired 64 franchise and multi-unit brands, including household names like Arby’s, Corner Bakery, and Cinnabon. Their proposal struck a chord with him, as they committed to supporting his vision while preserving his unique identity.

Over two years, he forged a strong bond with the Roark team. In 2016, he made the momentous decision to sell a significant portion of his company shares to Roark Capital while retaining a 35% stake and his role as Chairman and the largest individual shareholder. Notably, the management structure remained unchanged, with James North assuming the role of CEO and President.

In 2019, Jimmy John’s founder took another strategic step by integrating his remaining stake in Inspire Brands. Although he still holds shares in Inspire Brands, his primary focus has shifted towards the meaningful work of his Foundation and his family’s investment endeavors. His legacy continues to shine brightly, marked by entrepreneurial brilliance and a profound commitment to making the world a better place through philanthropy and business acumen.
