Let's turn the page

Posted by thomersch on 16 December 2020 in English.

OpenStreetMap Calendar is here for over a year and now we’re ready to make the next step: Let’s unify forces and put osmcal onto the wiki’s main page. Thanks to the microgrant, I was able to dedicate a good amount of time to extend the software ecosystem and make osmcal ready for everyone.

The OSM Wiki now has an osmcal extension, which makes integrating a calendar into any wiki page as simple as typing <osmcal />. It even supports filtered calendars, e.g. the United States wiki page contains all upcoming events just in the US.

The logical next step is to deduplicate the work needed to publish an event, so we’re aiming to switch the calendar template inside the wiki towards the end of 2020, so for 2021 events you only need to put events into osmcal and they’ll be available anywhere.

There are some cool external integrations which reach even more people:

  • openstreetmap.be was the first site to include osmcal onto their site: The locale support simplifies localization, so events are shown in English, French and Dutch: osmcal on openstreetmap.be

  • openstreetmap.de recently joined and is now displaying all upcoming events in Germany: osmcal on openstreetmap.de

You can integrate osmcal easily into any website by using Jonathan Beliën’s awesome widget. The integration into openstreetmap.de took less than 10 lines of code. For a more custom solution, you can use the API.

If you’re creating an event, please add it to osmcal.org. We’ll try to make sure it’ll be seen by as many people as possible.

OpenStreetMap Calendar (osmcal) is a collaborative calendar for OpenStreetMap events. It’s focussed on good usability on desktop and mobile, provides subscription functionality to stay updated on newest events and even allows event organizers to create sign-up surveys.

Great, that was one of the items on my wish list for 2020. Three down, one to go!
