fustrated with Potlatch

Posted by meannder on 27 September 2010 in English (English).

Every time I use Potlatch, it seems to become slower and slower, saying 'waiting for the server' or 'loading data' (but there is no communication...). Sometimes it even refuses to react, making it impossible to upload new streets. Very fustrating, waiting for things comming so slow.
Does someone know the reason?
I use Mozilla-firefox in Ubuntu-linux...
Thinking of using "Merkaartor" once I understand how this thing is working; doesn't find a 'users manual'...

I use Merkaartor and I love it, it's simple and fast.
The documentation have moved from the openstreetmap wiki to so some part are messy and links are broken.
Important information are there (creating/moving node, way, split, join ...).
But it lacks some information about the process :
- download a small area (with the slippy map or paste a permalink)
- move around (panning) with a drag and drop with the right button
- if the area is not big enough download more (CTRL+SHIFT+D)
- do some editing with the tools, don't forget to deselect the tool with ESC
- and finaly upload your changes
Everything is on the toolbar.

And to not be frustrated again, I've to warn you, it happens some time (but less frequently than before) that Merkaartor crash when you do extensive editing (lot of download and lot of gps track).

try also a different time of day - sometimes the servers seem a little slow....

Make sure you're zoomed in a long way before trying to edit.

If you click 'Edit' when a whole city is visible, that's a lot of data to pull down from the server, and it will take a long time.

I have the same problem, using Potlatch in Chrome, on a specific computer. It seemed to work on another machine. It seems to have started about July. The error occurs when trying to upload changes, downloading data is not a problem, and it doesn't seem to matter what time of day.

It is a pity, I switched to Josm but its not as convenient to use.

Upload frequently. Don't do 30 minutes of changes and then upload; rather, upload every 5 minutes or so. Otherwise for large relations, in particular, the server can take so long sending the "ok" message back that Flash Player times out.

Try JOSM, download with Potlach is really slow even when zoomed in to the maximum on Linux x86_64, the newest flash even does work, but gnash.

I, too recommend you graduate to JOSM. It is, once you get the hang of it, far easier to use. Of course the learn curve is somewhat higher but you can always ask this wonderful community if you require advice or help: It has always responded to my woes just as it is doing for you.
The advice is: Use JOSM

is there a copy/paste function in josm like there is in potlatch using the R key?

@flaimo: you can copy an object, then press Ctrl-Shift-V to copy its attributes to another object.
