most of the time clicking on the edit mode (saved or immediate) has no effect, but finally I was able to click "saved" and got a cursor that looks like an ancient pen tip. I can't do anything with it, clicking does nothing.

While potlatch does work in Debain the last time i tried I would recommend using josm anyway :)

On Linux, such problems are usually a result of a dumb window manager not passing clicks/keypresses through to Flash Player. But, yes, if you're the sort of person who likes Debian then you'll probably also be the sort of person who likes JOSM. :)

For me this is a issue with flash on 64bit, changing WM doesn't help me. So I'm reluctantly using JOSM, which is becoming better at making mapping fun for me ("better" is not saying much).

You can try to lauch firefox this way:
GDK_NATIVE_WINDOWS=1 /usr/bin/iceweasel
It has fixed the problem for me, YMMV
