I feel nostalgic

Posted by ika-chan! UK-USA on 10 July 2014 in English.

The title explains most of this post: given that OpenStreetMap is 10 years old this month, I wonder if anyone still has the original default map style, so I can render today’s London in 2004’s Mapnik (or its predecessor), preferably in Maperitive?

I’ve only got Maperitive, so if it isn’t possible then can the OSM community help me accomplish this?

Thanks.

Screenshots of the early ‘style’ (which is possibly overstating it) are difficult to find. The only one I’ve unearthed so far is http://vagueterrain.net/journal/13/dreher/dreher-3.png , but it’s very low resolution.

But, in short, the earliest style that I remember was a Landsat background, with thickish white lines for each way, and I think with some black casing. That’s it. Assuming you can get the Landsat background, it shouldn’t take more than five minutes to knock up in Maperitive/TileMill/whatever.

To really look like this original style it should also take ages to load ;-)

Well really it should mostly not load at all ;-)
