The trouble with showing capacity tag on https://opencampingmap.org
Posted by giggls on 30 October 2020 in English.Starting from a pull request for https://opencampingmap.org at github https://github.com/giggls/opencampsitemap/pull/13 I added visualisation code for capacity and maxtents tags.
Unfortunately it is far from clear if capacity means people or number of camp pitches in case of campsites.
While the Wiki clearly states, that number of people are meant many mappers seem to think that we are talking about the number of pitches.
Unfortunately there is nothing I can do about this.
Any ideas?

I suggest changing the wiki, because “number of people” does not make any sense. The number of pitches is (often) clearly defined while the number of people would depend on how many people you are willing to cram into your tent or motor home. In case of a camp site consisting basically of an open meadow the number of pitches might be flexible, but the number of people even more so.

Not a good idea because on backcountry sites as well as group-only campsites the Number of people is quite important because it is often limited.
However on stationary camping/caravaning sites nobody usually cares about the number of people at all. However I seriously doubt that defining capacity either way depending on the type of campsite is a good idea.
This said the Number of pitches is often not as clearly defined also. Pitches might be divided into the ones for permanent residents and the ones for holiday campers and people using tents will often be directed to a meadow use for an undefined number of tents.

I see that the wiki already specifies a “maxtents” attribute. We could add a “maxcaravans” attribute, deprecate “capacity” and introduce a “maxvisitors” attribute instead which would give the max number of people.

I don’t think we should move from “capacity” away. It is a widely used (1M) key (most of them in other contextes) but it’s known to the mappers.
I look through the classes of a group_only campsites mapper and user as well. Capacity as of persons is a pretty nice tag when search for a camp site for the next groups summer camp.
Is there a real world utilization of maxtents information apart from backside camping?

We are talking about campsites only here. “capacity” does make sense in other contexts (e.g. parking), but is misleading in case of campsites. I like the idea of having three max-tags.
Maybe I should start a thread about this issue on the tagging mailinglist.

From taginfo: We have 112923 campsites. 4948 of them have a capacity tag which is about 4,4% oft sites. I wonder how many of them are about pitches not sites.

“maxtents” has 1189 entries. So far from irrelevant.

I don’t think we should move away from capacity either, but adding maxtents, maxcaravans etc. like lyx suggested would be a good idea imo.
