Is there a way to delete, screen out or otherwise block the blatant (at least to me) advertisements which have been showing up?

Yes, there is a system to deal with these semi-automatically. Occasionally some are missed, best to add them here: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Spam

Ok - sorry Guys.
I naively thought I'd have a try to get an advertising person interested in maybe looking at OSM and then he'd be unable to stop himself adding all his clients businesses as POIs into OSM.
I thought that he must have spent a fair amount of effort to create so many accounts with different e-mail addresses done the confirmations and then entered some reasonably high quality advertising.
I even hoped that the owners of the businesses may have gotten involved and well then the skys the limit. We would soon have thousands of OSM POI data collectors :-)
Ahhh well - I think is was worth a shot. Shame no one replied :-(
PS His clients seemed to mostly be in the one town and I hoped maybe to get a whole town involved - that'd be interesting.
Could someone dump that last 50 or so adverts into my inbox. When I get time I may contact the businesses involved and see if I can help them get onto OSM.

Do you mean advertisements in the OSM blogs, or in the OSM data itself?
