What I did in OpenStreetMap in November 2021

  • Advisory Board
    • Nov 2021 Advisory Board Meeting
    • I emailed members about the upcoming AB meeting: osmf-talk@, talk@, 🐘, 🐦
    • Microsoft presented about their “MapBuilder” editor, a fork of iD. People will be able to edit OSM via an edit button on Bing Maps. Currently all edits go into one OSM account, but they need to figure out how to do this properly.
    • ESRI couldn’t make the meeting.
    • Microsoft also said OSM data was used for Bing Maps in Australia & South America, which is great to see. But some keen eyed OSMers on Discord noticed some differences in PoI (e.g. osm vs bing maps). I emailed our MS rep to confirm
  • Microgrants
    • Told the members that we’re going to shelve it for now
  • 15th Annual General Meeting of the OpenStreetMap Foundation
    • Every AGM, I break the OSM wiki with unicode. It happened again 🤣 (The actual problem is, I think, the OSM Wiki content is saved in a MySQL database which can’t handle certain higher numbered unicode code points) 🐘 🐦
  • Informed OSMers about the adoption of the “sotm safety policy” adoption. osmf-talk@, talk@

  • We had a CWG meeting on 1 Nov (notes).
  • Promotional Material Programmme
    • There was a flurry of new promotional material requests / sticker requests, after WeeklyOSM № 589 mentioned it. I’m slowly getting through them all.
  • OSM Mastodon
    • I use a Mastodon ⇄ Twitter crossposter to keep my @amapanda@en.osm.town and @lalonde twitter account synced for OpenStreetMap. I want that to be set up for the @openstreetmap twitter and @openstreetmap@en.osm.town fediverse.
    • I’ve emailed someone who controls the twitter account to ask them to set it up.
  • I also wanna look at improving the OpenStreetMap Instagram and OpenStreetMap Pinterest accounts. I emailed CWG, no-one’s objected, yet.
  • Ordered another batch of 1,000 “I ♥ OpenStreetMap” stickers (in english)
