New maps in progress for Costa Rica

Posted by Wollie on 24 June 2009 in English.

Hello everybody,

I've just recently signed up for OpenStreetMap and I'm very enthousiastic about it. I'm living in Costa Rica and it's clear that there is pretty much mapping that needs to be done in the future.

The last few days I've spend learning JOSM and it's quite a powerful tool. At first I added some missing streets in the area I live in (which currently only has main roads mapped) but yesterday I drove a 21 KM trip on roads that where unmapped before. I've just made them in JOSM, uploaded them and included my GPS tracks for the public to use.

I've noticed that some village POI's where placed wrong on the map (perhaps somebody, although it's not allowed, used data from somewhere else). This is corrected now.

Since my father in law is a topograph (is that a correct word?) I have access to a lot of know-how in mapmaking and I can always ask him for details about a certain road. I'll just make sure never to use any data from the maps he made (for customers or the government). What I can do is request some data from his equipment and process it myself.

I'm looking forward to expand the map of Costa Rica and to be an active community member.

¡Pura Vida!
