I feel like a vandal

Posted by Welshie on 13 December 2011 in English.

Yesterday, I was cycling along the Old Bailey - not my usual route to work, and noticed a lack of something.

A whole block had been razed to the ground by developers in some redevelopment scheme.

While I was editing Openstreetmap to reflect the new state of reality, I felt like a vandal. All those POIs relfecting all the businesses along that block that had been carefully mapped by other mappers were deleted, a service road deleted. In it's place now lies a bit landuse=construction.

You're not a vandal, just the opposite, but watch out for one of the armchair mob putting it back to the way their old aerial imagery looks :-)

On the A46 between Widmerpool and Margidunum, where the road network has changed during the widening works, I have left a way (on the route of the old way) with just a note on it explaining what has happened - seams to have kept anyone from adding the old roads back - unlike areas of Nottingham city centre where the roads reappeared shortly after I had removed them completely during road realignment works!

I always make sure to tag it as source=survey to impress on future editors that this is as seen on the ground.

(I know, a bit late) Wouldn’t it be great (thinking of the future) if, instead of deleting things we could just add tags “demolished:date” and for the new items “constructed:date” then change the normal searches to “now” and leave the options open for “state at date X” - yeah I know, too complex.
