OSM Sandbox

Posted by Tomasz Chodorowski on 29 June 2020 in English.

Why is there no OSM Sandbox for map editing? People should practice map editing on a empty map with satellite images so they can actually build the world, learn how to actually edit, etc.

Why has this not been implemented yet? Are you people crazy? What if editors make some nonsensical edits on the map so they can learn how to edit? This has to be added to OSM for both guests and users.

You can launch a sandbox editor.

But generally, it’s not needed because in a good editor, you can see what you’re doing. And beginner mistakes are often easy to correct even if they get uploaded.

Mistakes that are often made by beginners, are usually convention mistakes (like naming a feature in all-caps, or being overly descriptive), and those won’t be caught in sandboxes either.

I would have used it. I was pretty nervous when I was first introduced to editing and I actually had a hard time contributing because of the potential errors I could have implemented specifically involving work from others. a map that I can play without other important edits would be very comforting. Welp since there is a sandbox, I am sad I didn’t get to use it first.

Generally you would get more positive and constructive answers if you don’t call people crazy.

There are two sandboxes in OSM: one at the development server, which is almost empty, another in the iD editor: when you first open it, there is a thorough tutorial editing an imaginary town. You can access it later by opening the editor, clicking the question mark button at the right, and then clicking the “Start the Tutorial” button.

Also, as suggested on the Sandbox wiki page, you can do whatever in JOSM, provided you don’t upload your changes to the server.

And please - if you know that there is no sandbox then please stop deleting random objects or creating fake cities.
