It’s called NeuroPsychiatric Hospitals (NPH) because it’s a group of hospitals that specialize in treating people who have both a psychiatric problem and a medical or neurological problem. They are too sick to go to a traditional psychiatric hospital for treatment, but they are also too ill to go to a traditional medical hospital for treatment. There are many reasons why a 55-year-old person who is psychotic, dangerous to themselves and others, and has an infectious disease like AIDS would need help at the NeuroPsychiatric Hospital. Then there’s a person who is 20 years old and has extreme mood swings, is very violent, and has Asperger’s syndrome, too. A third example would be an 85-year-old who has dementia, is violent to other people, has acute kidney disease, and diabetes, but he or she is not violent.
