Getting Started in Clonmel

Posted by Finnán Barry on 1 April 2008 in English.

Hello all! I am Finnán Barry, and I am in Clonmel, Tipperary, Ireland. I hope to be mapping out my sizable hometown over the coming weeks as part of my transition year.

I'm looking for tips and pointers. I'm not old enough to drive but I wish to partake in this map program. I currently have a BGT - 11 GPS, bike and enthusiasm.

Location: Burgagery-Lands West, Clonmel West Urban, The Borough District of Clonmel, County Tipperary, Munster, Ireland

Hi Finnán

Welcome to OSM from another "newbie" (almost 60 years old, but only started in OSM a week ago), and the best of luck with your work!

Go n-eirí an bóthar leat!

[For foreign readers, that's a Gaelic (Irish language) wish which translates literally "may the road rise with you" but a more colloquially as "may your road/way/journey succeed" of "may you succeed", or simply "Good luck!"]

OSM would be an interesting project for any transition students, and could also form a part of local studies useful to both the students and and to the wider community.

Perhaps you could discuss this with your teacher and see if he/she could help promote the idea through your school, or even at county or national level?
Again, best of luck.

Regards

A bike is the near perfect mode of transportation for mapping!

Looking forward to your additions.

Hi Finnán!

I've only started recently myself in Athy, but am slowly building up streets here and there. My bike needs a bit of work, so it's either the car (not suitable for doing local streets, really) or walking for now. There's a talk-ie mailing list which is a bit quiet, but no harm to say hello there too, and be sure to check out the Ireland wiki page which has some good guidelines on classifying Irish roads.

Have fun!

Andrew

Hi Finnán! Welcome aboard from another Irish mapper, though I'm based in Dublin.

There's an Irish OSM IRC channel #osm-ie on OFTC (If you don't know what IRC is it's a multi user chat system, like MSN. You can connect using mibbit.com. Server: OFTC and Channel: #osm-ie) Irish people interested in OSM can hang out there and chat.

Hello all, its nice to see a growing Irish community in OSM. Lets face it, what this project needs the most is a big community!

I only discovered this site a coupe of days ago so I'm a newbie! But I have plans to add alot. I'm from Dublin 16 but I am currently working in Valkenburg in the Netherlands. I'm home next week so I'll try to do a bit of driving around mapping new areas.

BTW if any of you are boards.ie users, it would be nice if we could drum up some support in the GPS section. Some projects have really taken off in there, Ireland Offline , the bus map , folding at home etc

Talk to you guys in IRC
