Al-Houssan excelled in his studies while attending RCSI. He held a number of leadership positions. He was a Class Representative for the last three years. For two years, he served on the Emergency Society’s committee and as a Surgical Skills Tutor for the Surgical Society, where he taught students the fundamentals of suturing and laparoscopic skills.

During his time at RCSI, Al-Houssan also conducted extensive research, which allowed him to become a co-author and contributor to peer-reviewed, scholarly studies. He took part in cat allergy testing research for nearly three years. He collaborated with Red Maple Trials in Ottawa, Canada, to validate the city’s first naturalistic cat allergy exposure chamber. The findings were published in the European Respiratory Journal and the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology.
