On the 22nd and 23rd of November 2024, I visited the Ho Technical University (HTU) YouthMappers chapter for an exciting two-day program sponsored by OSM Ghana. These two days were not just about mapping but about igniting passion, fostering collaboration, and sharing stories that inspire.

Day One: Presentations and Knowledge Sharing

The first day began with a series of interactive presentations aimed at equipping participants with the tools and knowledge they need to excel as mappers. I spoke on YouthMappers and OpenStreetMap, delving into the purpose and vision of YouthMappers globally while highlighting how their contributions can create meaningful change in communities. Fellow mappers were introduced to tools such as Mapillary, StreetComplete, and through a lightning talk on both JOSM and iD Editor. Each presentation was tailored to ensure participants could grasp the importance and practical applications of these tools. The session wasn’t just about teaching—it was about motivating participants to see the potential of mapping in addressing local challenges.

To make the experience richer, I shared my personal success stories—from my journey in YouthMappers to how I’ve used these tools to contribute to impactful projects and uplift underserved communities. These stories served as a source of inspiration, reminding everyone that with dedication and teamwork, significant change is possible.

Day Two: Field Practice and Team Building.

The second day, 23rd November, was dedicated to field practice, allowing participants to apply what they learned the previous day. We started with StreetComplete, a powerful tool for on-the-ground data collection. Participants were divided into two groups and activated team mode, enabling them to collaboratively collect data efficiently. The 30-minute session not only built technical skills but also fostered a sense of teamwork among participants. Afterward, we returned to campus for a lunch break filled with lighthearted fun. This gave everyone the chance to relax, bond, and share their experiences so far. Alt text

In the late afternoon, we headed back to the field for Mapillary, a session focused on capturing street-level imagery to enrich OpenStreetMap. In 20 minutes, participants gathered data that would significantly enhance mapping in the region. This session highlighted the importance of community efforts in contributing to global mapping initiatives.

Acknowledgments and Words of Encouragement

A special thanks goes to the chapter’s co-advisor, Ms. Mends Laudina, whose active participation and leadership were instrumental in making the event successful. Her dedication to the chapter is a testament to the bright future of HTU YouthMappers. To the entire chapter and participants, your hard work and commitment have left an indelible impression. You are on the path to greatness, and I encourage you to continue learning, exploring, and making a difference. The foundation you are building will not only benefit HTU YouthMappers but also contribute significantly to the global mapping community, including their local communities. Finally, my appreciation goes to OSM Ghana for their unwavering support to the chapters across the country. Your continuous contributions enable young mappers to grow, connect, and make meaningful impacts in their communities. Safe to say we are not just mapping—we are shaping the future, one map at a time. Alt text
