Basem Hamid, a seasoned medical doctor specializing in neurology and pain medicine, graduated from Damascus University with an M.D. before embarking on an extensive postgraduate training journey in the United States. He completed a fellowship in Pain Medicine and now serves as the Director of Innova Pain Center, where he focuses on developing innovative treatments for chronic pain and engages in significant research in pain management and cancer-related pain therapies.

Born in Damascus, Syria, Basem Hamid, MD, excelled academically early, graduating as valedictorian from his high school in 1989. He was then admitted to the prestigious Damascus University School of Medicine, where he earned his medical degree in 1995, setting the foundation for his medical career.

After obtaining his M.D., he pursued further training in the United States, beginning with an internship at Mount Sinai University Services in New York City in 1996. He then completed an internal medicine and neurology residency at West Virginia University from 1997 to 2001. During this period, he was appointed Chief Resident in the Department of Neurology at West Virginia University Hospitals, a role that allowed him to oversee the training of new residents and contribute significantly to the department’s success.

His interest in pain medicine led him to pursue a fellowship at the University of Iowa’s Department of Anesthesia in 2002, where he focused on various pain conditions, including chronic and cancer-related pain. He completed this fellowship in 2003.

He then became an Assistant Professor in the Department of Anesthesia and Neurology at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, where he worked from 2003 to 2006. His tenure there was marked by significant contributions to the university’s pain management program.

2006, he relocated to Houston, Texas, to join The University of Texas, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pain Medicine, Division of Anesthesiology and Critical Care. He also held administrative roles, including Chair of the Department of Pain Medicine’s Committee and Director of the Pain Medicine Fellowship Program, mentoring young doctors and advancing pain treatment protocols.

In 2008, he founded the Innova Pain Center in Houston. As the Director, he has been at the forefront of providing comprehensive pain management solutions for patients suffering from chronic pain conditions. His research efforts include leading studies on breakthrough treatments like Nasalfent for cancer pain and exploring the effectiveness of pregabalin for acute herpes zoster.

Throughout his career, Hamid has been recognized for his medical and community service contributions, including the Kennedy Center Award for Volunteers and the Above and Beyond Award from The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. He also actively participates in mentoring the next generation of medical professionals, showcasing his commitment to both medicine and community service.

Basem Hamid continues to make strides in pain medicine, significantly impacting patient care through his clinical expertise and research.
