Im not a fan of this change, I think it makes the map less useful. Every map of Yellowstone i've ever seen that shows backcountry campsites uses whats now the ref, not the long name, The short names are also used by when booking a backcountry permit. I dont think i've seen any software that makes use of the ref tag on a campsite.

Refering to other objects in Openstreetmap ref is usually the correct thing for stuff like this.
I did not invent the names. They are also called "name" in the official document I refered to in the changeset comment.
So what else would you suggest? I do not think that removing the real names from name tag alltogether would be a good idea. Actually I thought about putting the numbers into name tag in addition to what the document calls name, but frankly, that's actually what ref is for.
