Yes, because you removed the boundaries where the gaps were. happened in nieuwpoort, ostende and zeebrugge

You disconnected the water on the locks, for example here: http://www.openstreetmap.org/?mlat=51.32883&mlon=3.19790#map=19/51.32883/3.19790

Please don't do that. There IS water there, only not when the lock is closed.
