oscarBravo's diary

Recent diary entries:

This is becoming an obsession...

Last weekend I surveyed and mapped the dual carriageway section of the N4 just before Sligo, the Donegal bypass, some local roads around Glencolumbcille, much of the N56, some R roads around Errigal, R and local roads around Inishowen, and the road from Ballymena to Enniskillen via Cookstown and Omagh.

Since then I've added some detail of local roads around Westport, the R332 from Tuam to Kilmaine, the road from Belcarra via Ballyglass to Hollymount and on to the R332, some of the industrial area around Parkmore and Ballybrit in Galway, and the Monivea road as far as the N63. I also completed the N63 to where it meets the N17.

Today I've added some of the local roads between Balla and the N5, and (I think) all the housing estates in Balla.

AAAAAAAAAAAARGHHH!

In other words, I cleared a track from my GPS without checking that I had copied it successfully to the PC. What I thought was a track file turns out to have waypoints in it...

Still, got a few more Westport streets and one carpark done.

Westport

Uploaded and traced many of the residential streets and housing estates of Westport. Unfortunately I didn't have an easy way to note names, so that's an exercise for another day.

I was quite surprised to see that my meanderings for the evening clocked up a total of 31km.

N17 complete

Filled the gaps in the N17, traced the R334 from Ballinrobe to Headford, completed the N84 in Ballinrobe and traced the R331 from Claremorris to Ballinrobe.

Mayo continues

I've mapped the N60 from Balla to Ballyhaunis. If I'm not mistaken, this completes the N60. I've also mapped most of the R320 from Swinford to Claremorris, some streets in Claremorris, the link roads from Knock to the bypass, and the road from Ballyvary to Manulla.

Later today I'm hoping to complete the N17.

More Mayo

Had some obscure rural areas to visit for work last night, so brought the GPS - I now have some unclassified roads around Attymass (would have the road out from Foxford, but the GPS memory wrapped), the road from the N59 at Ardagh to Moygownagh, the R315 most of the way to Ballycastle, the R316, a chunk of R312, and R317 to Newport.

Mapping Mayo III

With the mapping of the entire N5 from Longford to Westport, as well as the N26, there's just one gap in the N17 to fill in and all primary routes in Mayo are complete.

I've been filling in detail on Westport, Castlebar, Ballina and Swinford, trying to get street names and one-way systems as accurately as I can. I've also been studying the SIs carefully to make sure the N and R roads are accurately mapped through the towns.

Mapping Mayo, continued

Several smaller roads around Castlebar, the N26 from Ballina to Foxford, the R310 from Ballina to Castlebar, the roads from Balla and Bohola to Kiltimagh and from Kiltimagh to Kilkelly and Knock... all pretty much done.

I'm tracing in the Westport and Ballina railway lines from the overhead imagery, but it's hard to get them accurate. I might have to get a train to Dublin sometime, and I'll bring the GPS.

More streets and local roads as I travel them...

Mapping Mayo

I have quite a few old traces in my Garmin from leaving it sitting on the dash as I do my normal business around the county, so I'm making a start on filling in the gaps in Mayo.

So far I have Westport's main streets, the N5 from Westport to Castlebar, a couple of the streets in Castlebar including the relief road, and several of the regional roads around Castlebar.

Coming up: more detail in Castlebar and Westport, roads to Ballina, and the N5 to Charlestown. Next week I should be able to complete the N5 to Longford.
